Back in the day, devices are not as abundant in the classrooms. Students would fight over the use of computers to play. Amusingly, friendships were lost over this. This is because learning didn’t feel like learning – it felt like fun. And while having fun, it improved math and spelling skills.
Today, no such fighting happen anymore, schools and homes are spoiled with tablets and computers. This technology has transformed our lives – to work, communication and entertainment.
It is known that there is still an untapped potential for learning and training in these devices and this year, the world will be closer in unraveling it.
Mobile Device Accessibility
Around the world, mobile devices are becoming more available to the masses. This will eventually lead to more opportunities for learning.
46% of businesses are now using mobile devices for learning – a 10% increase since 2010. The use of mobile devices also shows that on average a student will perform 12 points better compared to traditional learning.
Also, initiatives are popping up with the focus on giving children access to mobile technology. For example, India and Thailand have government schemes to provide children with tablet access.
More Learning Through Fun
One of the top compelling ways that learning and technology overlap is through gaming. Gaming provides learning an engaging experience that encourages knowledge absorption and understanding at a deeper level.
One of the hit games of last year, Minecraft, now has a mudpack that can teach quantum physics. Angry Birds even has a spinoff called Angry Birds Playground that has an online and offline curriculum for learning. This year is also the jumpstart of new consoles, Xbox One and PS4. This will snowball the creative integration of games and education.
Tech Literacy
It’s the time where even your grandparents can use your tablet. Most people nowadays know how to use technology. It’s commonly noted though that we know how to use it but we don’t actually understand how it work. Despite this, technology was able to penetrate our lifestyle. With this more global acceptance of technology, more developers will be open to creating learning apps as there will be a market for them.
