A study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed that 15 year old Singaporean students devote 9.4 hours for their homework per week. This made Singapore to rank third globally behind students in Shanghai and Russia who spent 13.8 hours and 9.7 hours, respectively. The report was based on results from a survey conducted in 2012 among 510,000 OECD Program students to measure the academic achievement of 15 year olds.
The study also shows that students who spent more time in doing their homework got higher score in OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa). Pisa is a test designed to measure the academic achievement of 15 year old students. However, we cannot conclude that students who spend less in doing their homework mean they also learn less.
Addressing parents’ concern over excessive time on homework, the Singapore Ministry of Education said that the 9.4 hours is fairly reasonable for a student preparing for the national examinations. The MOE also explained that schools have implemented policies to manage the homework load on different subjects and departments. In this way, students will not be bombarded with too much assignment on the same time.
